Kumquat
Scientific name: Citrus japonica ou Fortunella japonica
Popular name: Kumquat ((means “golden tangerine” in chinese dialet cantonese).
Botanical family: Rutaceae.
Plant native to South Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, whose earliest historical references appear in Chinese literature of the 12th century. In China, the fruit is called chin kan, or chin chin, and is commercially produced on a small scale. It is common in Japan, where it is much appreciated and called the "fruit of happiness".
Varieties and uses: the main varieties are: round kunquat, also called "Marumi kumquat" or "Morgani kumquat", being the most cultivated because of its resistance to cold and whose fruits are mainly used in jams and jellies; kunquat oval (Citrus margarita or Fortunella margarita), whose fruit is usually consumed whole, with peel; and Jiangsu kunquat (Citrus obovata or Fortunella obovata), whose fruit can be consumed in natura or used in jams and jellies.
The fruits measure from 1.8 to 2.5 cm in diameter and 3 to 4 cm in length, have a shell of strong orange color or even golden, with oil glands; have few seeds; sweet juice, but with a strong, slightly juicy, slightly acidic flavor with 4 to 5 segments. The fruit has an orange peel and thin, with oil glands, which can be eaten together with the pulp, separating it from the small and few seeds.
